A software company in Washington, DC, since 2008

We find the work a team still does by hand, build the system that does it, and train the team to run it. We have done this for 18 years without a gap: federal software for Booz Allen Hamilton from 2008, DC Public Schools from 2010, National Science Foundation (NSF) research centers and the DC Department of Public Works since 2016. Today we run our own company on the AI systems we build for clients.

Our history

2008: KZN Consulting, Inc. is incorporated in Maryland.
2008: For Booz Allen Hamilton, we start two years on the Defense Acquisition University's online learning system. We design the architecture for its move to a new platform, load test and tune it to handle ten times its traffic, prototype a new portal, and mentor the team that runs it.
2010: We join the DC Public Schools student case management project as technical lead and developers. The student records are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
2012: Through Innate, we build a sales platform for a travel insurance group. It still sells policies in eight countries.
2016: We start work with research centers funded by the National Science Foundation.
2016: We start work for the DC Department of Public Works: an integration layer and data warehouse that are still in use.
2017: We build the service alerts platform for DC Public Works.
2018: We build neuronex.org, the NeuroNex program website, for the University of Houston. SimplyScholar grew out of this work.
2020: We are prime contractor on two state pandemic responses. Our systems process 4.2 million vaccinations.
2024: We receive our System and Organization Controls 2 (SOC 2) Type II report. We start work for Texas A&M AgriLife.
2025: We start running our own company on AI systems: daily briefings, email sorting, meeting notes and invoice checks.
2026: AI implementation becomes our main service. We take a client through their own SOC 2 audit.

Systems that last

Our data warehouse for the DC Department of Public Works has run since 2016, through several chief information officers and a pandemic. The travel insurance platform we built in 2012 still sells policies in eight countries. We build systems that keep working while the staff, software and vendors around them change.

A senior engineer leads every project: The person who scopes your project is the person who builds it, and stays with it through review.
Your staff can run it when we finish: New projects have a fixed scope and end date. Before we finish, your staff are trained and the system is documented. A system that nobody on staff can change soon stops being used, so training is part of the build.
A price range on the first call: We give you a price range on the first call. New projects are priced as a fixed fee before work starts, so you know the cost while you can still change your plans.

Credentials

SOC 2 Type II: We hold a SOC 2 Type II report dated 2024. We can send it to you on request.
Both sides of an audit: In 2026 we took a client through their own SOC 2 audit, including the penetration testing and the evidence for the auditors. They received their report.
Sensitive data: We built and ran Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) infrastructure for the Maryland Department of Health, secured to the Center for Internet Security (CIS) Level 1 standard, and it passed a state security review. We also led development on FERPA-covered case management for DC Public Schools.
Long-running systems: A 2012 sales platform that still sells in eight countries, and a data warehouse for the DC Department of Public Works, in use since 2016.

Contracting vehicles

Agencies can hire us through any of these today, so work can start in weeks.

Maryland CATS+: The state's Consulting and Technical Services+ contract, in all ten functional areas. Maryland agencies, and the local governments that can use it, hire us with a task order.
SAM.gov: Registered and current, with a Unique Entity ID and a Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code, for federal work as prime or subcontractor.
Maryland MBE and SBE: A certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and Small Business Enterprise (SBE) in Maryland. On a contract with an MBE or SBE participation goal, our share of the work counts toward it.
Extending an existing contract: An existing contract can sometimes carry new work as a sole-source extension. We have done this with DC.
